At the institute where I work, in addition to national and international research projects, we do consultancy work for several big companies. This means that at any one time I am working on a range of materials for different applications such as rechargeable batteries, fuel cells, electronic components, gas separation membranes, gas turbine engines, and hydrogen storage, just to name a few.
My project is all about the element carbon. It’s the 6th element in the periodic table, one of the most common elements in Universe and it’s essential for life. We can make materials called activated carbons which are made up of this element, and they contain lots and lots of tiny nano-sized holes. These holes are really important and mean activated carbons can be used in lots of things like filtering water, removing harmful chemicals from your body, and in batteries. I also use them to try and store hydrogen, which is a rocket fuel we can make from water, so we can use it power cars one day.
I am the manager of a control room, which looks after lots of people’s heating and hot water. I make sure that all our equipment is working properly so people get this heat energy, and if it isn’t working I send people out to fix it.
