Question: What interesting things have you found occurring in a powered battery?

A lot of the work I do is involved in figuring out why batteries wear out during use. I model the atomic level changes in that occur materials and compare the results with experiment. The crystal structures of these materials and the changes they undergo – the different arrangements of atoms – can be very beautiful.
