The most popular solution to the problem is to wear glasses. I’m shortsighted and (when I remember them) I wear glasses. At the back of your eye is a layer called the retina, which converts the light coming in into signals which it sends to your brain. This is how we see. Shortsighted-ness is just when the light coming from objects that are further away is focused just in front of the retina rather than onto it. Glasses or contact lenses help by focusing the light onto the right place.

If you have any concerns about your eyesight then have a chat to your parent/guardian and visit an Optician 🙂

There’s also a modern method that’s only for adults called laser eye surgery. The science however works in a very similar way to glasses but it is a permanent solution. An optician uses a laser to slightly reshape the very front of your eye (called the cornea) so it focuses the light on the retina in the correct place.

I’m short sighted too! I wear contact lenses to help focus the light in the right place like Jemma explained.

I’m no opthamologist, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but some things which are known to worsen your eyesight are excessive use of computers and other close-up activities like reading and watching TV.
Using a computer all the time trains your eye muscles to always be focused on close objects (short-sightedness), so take frequent breaks to look into the distance, do some eye exercises, and don’t stay up late on the computer when your eyes and brain need to rest. Looking at a monitor in poor lighting (and also excessively bright lighting) tires your eyes even more, so always be sure to only look at monitors in a comfortably lit environment.

Probably the best “natural” solution to short-sightedness is to spend as much time as you can outdoors – hiking, rambling and playing outdoor sports are excellent activities for training your eyes to look into the far distance. Also remember to eat healthy foods full of vitamins and minerals, since your eyes are very delicate instruments that require a constant supply of nutrients to stay in good condition. Hopefully doing these things while you are still young can help improve your eyesight.
