The sun gets its energy from the matter that makes up the sun – mostly hydrogen. The hydrogen undergoes nuclear fusion reactions which create very high temperatures, the energy released by the fusion reactions is then radiated from the surface as sunlight. The sunlight takes just over 8 minutes to get as far as the earth.
