Wires are used to transport electricity from one point to another. Electricity, or electric current, is a flow of electrical charge. You need a material to carry this charge, which is usually copper. The electricity that is conducted through copper wires in your house is actually made up of the moving electrons in the copper atoms.

We make wires out of copper because it conducts electricity, and we coat the copper with plastic to stop you from getting an electrical shock.
