You create a potion every time you make a cup of tea (or coffee!). This may not be so interesting, though, so how about trying different herbal teas? Their colours and flavours will depend on the type of herb or flower you use.

One of my favourite potions, though, is not made to drink, but to grow crystals in. All you need is a glass jar, some warm water, a string, a pencil (or other longish object) and salt, for example, table salt, Epsom salt, baking soda, or alum (if you have some in your household). Pour the water into the jar and dissolve about half a teaspoon of salt into it by stirring. Next tie your string to the pencil, and dangle the string in the water by placing the pencil over the jar’s mouth. After some hours (or maybe a day or two if it’s slow) you will grow lots of tiny crystals. You can grow even bigger ones by repeating the process with the same string, or tie the string into different shapes to see what happens. It’s also fun to look at the crystals using a magnifying glass or microscope and see what the differences between crystals made from different salts are.
